This is the placeto find the place.

Assisted living, from the licensing record.

It starts small. The same story told twice in one visit. A stack of unopened mail. A pan left on a lit burner. Nothing a doctor would call an emergency, and everything that keeps you awake at two in the morning.

Assisted living is for someone who needs help with the day — meals, medication, bathing, getting around — but not a nurse on site all night. It is the step most families are really looking for when they start searching nursing home, and the step most of them argue themselves out of for a year longer than they should.

It is also the least documented setting in senior care. States license it, not CMS, and what they publish ranges from a full enforcement history to a name and an address. We show what exists and say where the record stops. A thin listing means a thin public file, not a bad home.

Assisted living has no federal inspection file. Anywhere.

CMS licenses and inspects nursing homes. It does not touch assisted living — that is each state's job, and states publish wildly different amounts. So this is built from state licensing records, and where a state releases its enforcement history we add it. Where a state publishes little, the listing says so instead of guessing.

Wanting more than a brochure is the right instinct.

You are not being difficult by asking what the state actually has on file. You are asking the one question that separates two communities with the same photographs and the same monthly rate. Where a state answers it, we show you. Where it does not, we say so, because a guess dressed up as a finding helps nobody.

Common questions

How many assisted living communities are there?
57,583 are listed on Palmelle across all 50 states, built from state licensing records. There is no single federal register of assisted living, so no national count is definitive — including this one.
Does the government inspect assisted living?
States do. CMS does not. That is the single most important thing to know: the federal inspection data that exists for nursing homes does not exist for assisted living, anywhere in the country, on any website.
Why do some listings show much less information than others?
Because the state publishes less. A community in a state that releases its enforcement history will show far more than one in a state that publishes only a licence. A thin listing reflects a thin public record, not a worse community.
What does assisted living cost?
It varies by market more than by anything else, and the advertised monthly rate is rarely the number a family ends up paying — care levels are usually priced on top. Ask for the current rate sheet including every care level, in writing.
